How Does It Work?

Rolfing is an original and scientifically validated system of body restructuring and movement education. It releases the body’s segments – legs, torso, arms, etc. – from life-long patterns of tension and bracing and permits gravity to realign them. By doing so, it balances the body.

Alignment: To align the body segments (head, torso, legs, etc.), Rolfing systematically organizes your body’s soft, connective tissue, called fascia. Fascia that has been shortened through injury or chronic tension can be lengthened and revitalized through Rolfing. After Rolfing, your body is able to release compensations, muscles return to a balanced relationship and body segments settle into new, comfortable positions that are aligned and supported.
Feeling: You and Cathy create a partnership to work at the appropriate depth, pace, and areas required to affect change. Sensations in the area being worked may range from pleasurable warmth to momentary discomfort – usually described as “a good pain.” At times there may be little sensation at all. How you will feel during Rolfing depends on several factors, such as injuries to the area or tension caused by chronic stress. Rolfing is usually not painful, contrary to it’s outdated reputation, but you also will not fall asleep during a Rolfing session. This partnership to work at the level that is supportive to you, helps achieve the goals of Rolfing.

By addressing the entire body, as opposed to just the area that hurts or is stuck, compensatory patterns are released and your whole body can find a new way of being. After the Ten Series, you may walk, stand, and look different. You may be taller and your movements will require be more fluid and require less effort. With renewed ease, many people also experience psychological shifts from releasing old memories in your tissue.
